Physical structure and core components of industrial joysticks


From a structural point of view, industrial joysticks are mainly composed of operating handles, sensors, control circuits and housings. The operating handle is the part that the operator directly contacts, and it conveys operating instructions to the system through movements in different directions such as forward and backward, left and right, or rotation.

 

The core of the industrial joystick is the sensor, and common ones are potentiometer sensor joysticks and Hall sensor joysticks. Taking the potentiometer sensor as an example, its working principle is to use the voltage division principle of the potentiometer. When the operating handle moves, it will drive the sliding contact of the potentiometer connected to it to move. The resistance value of the potentiometer will change with the change of the sliding contact position, thereby changing the output voltage. This output voltage signal represents the position information of the handle and is transmitted to the control system.

 

The working principle of the Hall sensor is to use the Hall effect. When the current passes through the semiconductor substrate (i.e., the Hall element) placed in the magnetic field, a voltage will be generated in the direction perpendicular to the current and the magnetic field. This voltage is called the Hall voltage. In the industrial joystick, the movement of the handle will change the strength or direction of the magnetic field, thereby changing the Hall voltage output by the Hall element. The control system can determine the position and direction of the handle based on these changing voltage signals.

 

The control circuit is the "brain" of the industrial joystick. It receives the signal from the sensor, amplifies, filters, converts the analog signal into a digital signal and processes it so that the control system such as the computer or programmable logic controller (PLC) can recognize and process it. The processed signal is transmitted to the power system or actuator of the equipment to control the forward and reverse rotation, speed, opening of the hydraulic valve, etc. of the motor, so as to achieve precise control of the mechanical equipment.

 

For example, in a crane, the operator issues different instructions such as rising, falling, amplitude change, rotation, etc. through the joystick. The sensor in the joystick converts these instructions into electrical signals, which are processed by the control circuit and transmitted to the control system of the crane. The control system then controls the corresponding motor and hydraulic system according to these signals to achieve precise lifting and lowering of the hook, extension and retraction of the crane arm, rotation of the fuselage, etc.
